Mission Beach — Where the Rainforest Meets the Reef
Mission Beach is one of Queensland's best-kept secrets. Tucked into the Cassowary Coast in Tropical North Queensland — roughly halfway between Cairns and Townsville — it's one of the only places on Earth where two UNESCO World Heritage areas sit side by side: the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Offshore, the Family Islands scatter across the Coral Sea within easy reach of the coast. Dunk Island, Bedarra Island, Wheeler Island, and Coombe Island each offer their own unique character — from the resort history of Dunk to the total seclusion of Bedarra. Beaver Reef, our primary reef site, sits approximately 18 kilometres offshore and is widely regarded as one of the most unspoiled and accessible reef systems in the entire Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Between June and October, humpback whales migrate through these waters, often visible from our vessels. Green sea turtles nest on local beaches and are a regular sighting on reef trips. Southern cassowaries — critically endangered and found almost nowhere else — inhabit the rainforest immediately behind the beach.
This is why we do what we do. If you're going to show people a corner of the world, it might as well be this one.

Mission Beach & the Cassowary Coast
Mission Beach sits on the Cassowary Coast — one of the few places in the world where ancient rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. The town is small, unhurried, and genuinely beautiful. Clump Point Jetty is the natural gateway to the reef, the Family Islands and some of the most pristine coastal waters in Far North Queensland.
Beaver Reef lies roughly 40 minutes offshore and sits within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Dunk Island is just 20 minutes by boat. On a clear day you can see both from the jetty. We have been running tours from this point for years — these are our home waters.

Testimonials
What Our Guests Say

Protecting the Ocean We Love
The Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea are irreplaceable. Every decision we make — from the products we carry to the way we anchor — is guided by a genuine commitment to keeping these waters healthy for generations to come.
Low-Impact Operations
Our vessels are maintained to minimise fuel consumption and emissions. We follow strict no-wake zones near sensitive reef and seagrass areas to protect marine habitats.
Reef-Safe Practices
We require all guests to use reef-safe sunscreen and provide biodegradable alternatives on board. Anchoring on coral is never permitted — we use mooring buoys wherever available.
Zero Single-Use Plastic
Single-use plastics have been eliminated from all our tours. We provide reusable water bottles, compostable cups and packaging, and carry all waste back to shore for proper disposal.
Marine Wildlife Respect
We follow strict wildlife interaction guidelines — no touching, chasing or feeding marine life. Our guides are trained in responsible wildlife observation to keep animals stress-free.
Supporting Local Community
We partner with local Indigenous rangers and conservation groups, contributing a portion of every booking to reef monitoring and coastal clean-up programs in the Mission Beach region.
Educating Our Guests
Every tour includes a short eco-briefing so guests understand the fragile ecosystems they're visiting. We believe informed visitors become lifelong ocean advocates.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
The most common questions, answered honestly — so you know exactly what to expect.
Where do tours depart from?
All tours depart from Clump Point Jetty, Clump Point Road, Mission Beach QLD 4852. Free parking is available on site. Check in at the Mission Beach Adventures kiosk 15 minutes before your scheduled departure. Clump Point is approximately 5 minutes north of Mission Beach village and around 1.5 hours south of Cairns by road.
How long do tours take?
Full-day reef snorkelling trips run approximately 8:00am–3:00pm. The 3-hour Family Islands Tour departs at 9:00am and returns by noon. Sunset cruises run for 2 hours, departing around 5:00pm. Island transfers to Dunk Island take roughly 20 minutes each way. Private charters are flexible — duration is agreed around your group's schedule.
What is included in a reef trip?
Return boat transfer to Beaver Reef, all snorkel equipment (mask, fins, snorkel and wetsuit if needed), expert reef guide, morning tea, lunch and refreshments on board, and marine park fees. Reef-safe sunscreen is also provided. You don't need to bring your own snorkel gear — everything for the water is on board.
Who are reef snorkelling trips suitable for?
Reef trips suit all experience levels, including complete beginners. The minimum age is 6 years. Flotation devices are available for non-swimmers. Solo travellers, couples, families with children and older guests regularly join our tours. If you have concerns about ability or a medical condition, call us before booking — we'll give you a straight answer.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day?
We monitor Bureau of Meteorology forecasts and live sea conditions each morning before departure. If conditions are unsafe, we cancel and contact all guests directly. You'll receive a full refund or a free reschedule — your choice. We never depart in conditions that put guests at risk. Weather-related cancellations affect roughly 5–10% of tours per year.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking 2–7 days ahead during peak season (July–September) and school holiday periods, when small-group tours fill quickly. Outside peak times, same-day and next-day bookings are often available. Private charters benefit from 2–4 weeks' notice for custom planning. All bookings include free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure.
Are tours accessible for guests with limited mobility?
Our vessels can accommodate guests with moderate mobility limitations. Boarding assistance is provided and our boats are wide-beam and stable. We recommend calling before booking if you have specific mobility requirements — we'll be honest about what is and isn't manageable on each tour. Some snorkelling activities may be limited depending on individual circumstances.
Are tours suitable for families with young children?
Yes. Island transfers, sunset cruises and the Family Islands Tour welcome all ages, including infants. Reef snorkelling trips accept children aged 6 and above. Life jackets are provided for all guests. Our crew are experienced with families. The 3-hour Family Islands Tour is particularly well-suited to young children — calm water, multiple island stops, no snorkelling required.
How do island transfers to Dunk Island work?
Transfers depart from Clump Point Jetty on a scheduled basis. The crossing to Dunk Island takes approximately 20 minutes. Our crew assist with luggage including larger resort bags. Return transfers run on scheduled departures — confirm your return time when booking. We also service Bedarra Island and other Family Islands destinations; contact us to arrange.
What should I bring on a reef snorkelling trip?
Reef-safe sunscreen SPF50+ (biodegradable options available on board), swimwear, rash vest, hat, sunglasses, towel, water bottle and a waterproof case for your phone or camera. All snorkel equipment and wetsuits are provided — no need to pack your own. Note: standard sunscreen is prohibited within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
